What is Medical Oncology?

Cancer patients need to take in to account the likelihood of a cure, or of prolonging life when cure is not possible, the effect of treatment on their symptoms, and the side effects of the treatment. Cancer is not one disease, but a general term covering many distinct diseases. There are many cancer types requiring a variety of cancer treatments. Cancer is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of cells. Under normal conditions, cell reproduction is carefully controlled by the body. However, these controls can malfunction, resulting in abnormal cell growth and the development of a lump, mass, or tumor.

Some cancers involving the blood and blood-forming organs do not form tumors but circulate through other tissues where they grow. We have specialists for cancers involving blood and also for non-cancer blood disorders. Each type of cancer has patterns that may differ from other cancer types. And the same disease can often affect one person differently from another.
